PHPWomen has launched a partnership program for open source projects that are committed to embracing diversity and providing a welcoming and friendly atmosphere for contributors. We work closely with project leaders to identify specific areas of need, and will actively encourage our members to participate by promoting those needs through various channels. In return, the project leaders will ensure that newcomers to their projects will be welcomed and their contributions appreciated. This includes fostering an open and friendly environment for all newcomers, not just females.
To be a part of the PHPWomen Partnership Program, an open source project must:
- Clarify the openness of the project’s community, either through a Statement of Diversity, or through introductory or ‘welcome’ materials stating the general principles of equity, inclusion and support for all, regardless of gender, race, religion, age, or background. If this is not explicitly stated on the project’s site, you need to personally convince us that this is a priority for the project, and not just lip service. If we’re associating our name with your project, you need to ensure us that your community is not made up of jerks.
- Be willing to keep the PHPWomen contact in the loop with regard to the project’s specific needs as they change, and actively communicate with us on an ongoing basis.
- Clearly indicate if the project is funded by a commercial vendor.
By working together, we can help bring the diversity to FOSS projects that is so desperately lacking. We can also make it easier for someone to be a part of an awesome project. Open Source wins, our members win, and everybody goes home happy.
