The PHPWomen community is a helpful, friendly group of people from around the world who use PHP and related technologies such as MySQL, CSS, HTML etc. In developing and encouraging women who use PHP we undertake a number of tasks on a voluntary basis such as;
- Maintaining a website, forum and social media presence using tools such as WordPress, Twitter, FUDForum and Facebook
- Keeping an eye out for PHP related conferences, calls for papers and unconferences such as BarCamps and ensuring our members know about them through forum posts and mailing lists
- Assisting other members in growing their technical and professional skills; for instance reviewing a conference application or CV
- Providing a welcoming, friendly and helpful channel on IRC
- Maintaining a range of merchandise on sites such as Zazzle to help raise funds for the group, which are then in turn used to assist members to attend conferences and industry events
- Collecting and distributing review copies of books, and coordinating with those who would like to do book reviews.
- Managing our mentorship program (Big Sis/Little Sis).
- Evangelizing and promoting the group at conferences, and keeping track of conference shwag.
There are a number of tasks we’d greatly appreciate your assistance with. If you’re able to help out, simply jump in using the details below, or make contact with the PHPWomen representative coordinating the task.
PHPWomen Forums and website

The forums are a place to ask questions, get some assistance, find out about what’s happening around the world in PHP and the open source community and to showcase some of the work you’ve been doing. The types of tasks involved in maintaining the forums include;
- Ensuring new members on the forums are welcomed
- Contributing to articles or discussions
- Ensuring unwelcome contributions which are offensive or derogatory are flagged with moderators
- Reviewing website analytics (using Google Analytics) to identify key trends in site traffic and suggest enhancements
We’re also looking for people to write articles just for phpwomen! These wouldn’t be reposted but fresh information just for the members here. If you’d like to have a go – just jump straight in to the forums and have a go!
If you’re a keen news hound, and you keep your ear to the ground, we’d love you to help us keep up to date with what’s going on the PHP community, and related technical conferences. Heard a rumour? Read a great article – let us know in the forums or by writing up a longer article for the main site!
We also could use assistance managing the site itself; keeping the forum and blogging software updated. If you’re familiar with WordPress and/or FudForum and would like to help in this task, please let us know!
Merchandise
We maintain a number of products on various merchandise sites such as Spreadshirt and Zazzle so that PHPWomen and our fans around the world can show their pride! The tasks involved include;
- Maintaining products and creating new products with PHPWomen logos on the merchandise websites
- Reporting back on sales and popularity of different products
Social media and internet relay chat (IRC)

PHPWomen maintains a presence on various social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. The tasks involved in maintaining our social media presence include;
- Tweeting and posting about events and developments
- Responding to queries and comments
- Providing a welcoming and friendly face in the #phpwomen channel on irc.freenode.net
Book Reviews
From time to time we are approached by publishers who have books to offer to the group in exchange for a book review. There are several ways in which you can help:
- Coordinate this effort with the publishers and be the contact person. Post new books for review on our forums, and coordinate with anyone interested in writing a review.
- Writing book reviews. Book reviews help everybody, and they don’t need to be any grandiose works of art. As well, you get to keep any books you review. Win!
