Hi, there has been the idea/concept of a PHPWomen Cookbook being produced. Being Silly thing that I am I volunteered to collate and produce it.
- So here's the outline -
Concept:
You read the book 1 way and it will all be PHP Recipes. Flip the book over and it will all be culinary recipes for.
Costs:
Apart from Time needed to collate and make sure the book is in an appropriate format for both eBook and paperback printing, the actual book to have put into print will cost £200 (UKGBP) This covers the ISBN registration, the print setup and various other aspects too. Add on top of this an Annual Registration fee of £20 (UKGBP) to maintain the book on the list of available books, though this won't be required until the 11 month anniversary of the book's publication.
What Else is needed:
The nice idea would be something like "Chocolate chip $_COOKIES" as a culinary recipe and then match it up with something to do with $_COOKIE usage and best practice etc. But in general any recipes we can use, will be gratefully received.
What do you think?
Do you think that we can get this off the ground and in print?
Who is willing to place recipes for the book?
Donations to get the book into print maybe?
Any ideas will be gratefully received.

WE DID IT.
We finally have all the donations we need to pay for the book.
All we need now is Content, content, content.

Sounds like a cool idea!
I think cookie = $_COOKIE is the most obvious match, but here's some more food analogies I can think of (ok, I'm pulling them out of thin air, so bare with me)
- web services / mashups = fusion cooking
- spaghetti coding ( )
- syntactic sugar
- presentation / temPlate (get it? )
- validation = ... wash your veggies real well? (BOO)
Another idea to really tie it all together is to go through the whole process of writing an application, from selecting tools, db schema, architecture, to completion. And at the same time go through the whole multiple-course meal.
The application doesn't have to be complex, maybe a recipe database? Tied in with some social service to illustrate web services. And then have the real site to go with the book?
OK, going crazy here now

Hi everyone,
Sorry about the lack of information regarding the book. I'll outline the status and what is planning to happen and when we (I) hope to have this all done by.
The idea is to refine the topic of the book, make sure that we are on par for what should be a book of excellence for not only providing the content it does but also for the promotion of the group as a whole. The Book itself is a community project, so as a community we need to decide what direction we want it to take.
so on that note please can you reply with the answers to the following topic points:
- Should we make it a "cookbook" - eg should it include both the PHP and culinary recipes?
- Should we make sure there are pairs of recipes - one for PHP and 1 for culinary - like the cookies $_Cookie ... or should we just mix and match?
- Should the title Mention PHP Women? This is a topic i've heard answers from both sides on and would like to get more opinions on calling the book "The PHP Women CookBook" and including culinary recipes maybe gives off the "wrong impression"
- Does anyone know of anywhere where passing on the rights of publication to us for inclusion is not allowed under copyright law? If so, is there a legal way around it? Do we need a standard declaration for such, or can it be assumed so without legal issues. This is the biggest one as it will affect royalties which will be paid directly to the group.
So please can you reply to the above topics and then we can move on from there.
Once we have ironed out the plan forward, we shall be opening up a "call for papers" style request for content which will allow us to mix, match and collate the best concepts for the content of the book.
Any further questions, please do find me on IRC in the #phpwomen channel on Freenode or post a reply to the here.
Many Thanks, and again apologies for the delay in bringing this to completion.

Hi Kat,
Here are my reactions to your questions:
1. I think it would be great to include culinary recipes. The original idea of flipping over the book for the recipes sounds great!
2. I don't think it's possible to create pairs of recipes, not for everything. It's nice if you can but i wouldn't stick to it through the whole book
3. There is something to say for both. If you include phpwomen in the title it might scare of some of the male members to contribute to the book (for content). However, the book will be made from the phpwomen community so it should definitely mention phpwomen. Why not work with a subtitle?
4. I don't know much about copyrights. How do (other) opensource projects handle that?
I'm looking forward to the CfP and the book. I might consider writing a piece, if i can find the time and a good topic.
