Looking through some of the interests listed by the members on this forum, I'm surprised to see that there's a lot of creative crafts mentioned. Personally I'm a yarn craft enthusiast and although I don't knit that well, I love to crochet since learning a couple of years ago.

I find the repetitive action soothing and I love all the different colours and yarns. I'm interested to hear how others unwind from a day in front of the screen as its clear we're not just geeks Wink

I do not have any "crafty" habits - actually I kinda stink at all of them - though I did do cross stitch for a while (kinda went to the way side when other "more important" things came up). The one thing that I have always done, made time for, and even had a doctor tell me to do was reading (fiction, nonfiction, mystery, fantasy, romance - makes no difference as long as it is interesting). And I don't mean technical books Smile It is my major down time and stress releiver - my ME time. Husband and kid know after all this time that when I am in a book, to get my attention, they usually need to touch me since I will never hear them.

I knit, crochet, sew and do embroidery and cross-stitch. The only problem is I'm one of those who starts a million projects and never seems to finish them. The dress on the baby is the last thing I actually completed. I have a costume I need to get done before tuesday too...

I think I feel the same things for creating items that I do when I create a php application - the sense of accomplishment is wonderful.

I try to make time for painting and jewelry making - those are my favorite crafty hobbies.

I, too am making my son's Halloween costume - super easy Lego Block, but of course I haven't finished yet (4 days left, yikes!)

It's funny you mention this here, because here in Amsterdam it's quiet odd to be good at handycraft, or (I guess) to be open about that : I know nobody who knits, has a job and is my age! Very Happy Even my husband thinks it's a hormone-related thing that happens to pregnant women... But I really enjoy it, and it can catch me the same way a programming job can: I'll have to get it right and I'll have to finish it.

My mom was a cutter and sewster (is that the right word? I never ever needed this word and I couldn't find it in the dictionary..) for a fashion house in Amsterdam in the late 50's early 60's. When I was a child I would draw for her the dress (or pants or whatever piece of clothing) I'd liked to have and often she would make it for me. I designed complete wardrobes for my dolls too and when I was old enough for Barbies I made their wardrobes myself. My mom and my grandma taught me all kinds of handycrafts. I'm best at knitting and I've knitted lots of stuff for my children when they were babies. (Nowadays my oldest doesn't want to wear "mom-made clothes" anymore - it's much nicer to wear what everybody else is wearing Confused )

Marion - I think the word you want is maybe "dressmaker"? Knitting and so on isn't terribly cool here either but I think its catching on slowly within my age group, who mostly learned to knit as children and haven't done it since. I too "outgrew" mom-made clothes but now I'm begging her to help out or make things for me again - so make the most of the chance to make something for yourself!

Auroraeosrose - I agree with you that I get the same sense of achievement when I create something either software or "real".

Having another hobby forces me away from the screen once in a while which is probably very good for me Smile

Hi Lorna,

She just made dresses to see if her cut was ok. What she did was this: they would give her several drawings of the dress, and the material to make it from, and they would talk about it. Then she would draw all the pieces of the dress on paper. These pieces of paper are then used to pin on the material so you know what pieces to cut out of the material to make the dress. Her model was used to make the dresses they'd sell in their shops. That's why she was so good at making everything I sketched! In the fashionindustry ther must be a word for this, but I wouldn't know.

I don't think my friends will pick up knitting, and from what I've seen, I understand: they need all their attention to knit! I can knit with my eyes closed if needed, I watch tv, have a conversation or even read the newspaper while knitting. For me it's something that comes and goes: some winters I knit a small suitcase full of stuff and then for years I knit nothing, not even repair a sock Laughing

Every year around this time I spend 2 days at one of the growing number of excellent urban crafts fairs in the U.S., this one in San Francisco (kpfa.org/craftsfair), it's a juried exhibition of crafters from all over Northern California: knitting and other textiles, glass, pottery, paper, photography, toys, body products, jewelry, sculpture ... I feel a familiarity when I meet these crafters, a kinship. They work at home, they are enormously creative, they start and see projects through and fuss over every detail, they sit in their homes or their studios with patience and perseverance, they are architects, planners, designers, they thrive and race and take different angles, try new things. I am not surprised that a developer is also drawn to crafts. It is all craft.

Knitting is way cool in some parts of the U.S., there is a thriving counterculture which loves crafts and hand made things, they have books about how cool knitting is at chain bookstores... go figure..

Wiiii!! Fun suject!

I just recently (1 week ago) knitted myself a hat: the first complete knitted project I have ever done. I really enjoyed doing it, especially that I did not follow a pattern but "invented" it on the run.

I'm a big fan of everything that means crafts exactly for this reason: I never follow patterns, I like to think, design and craft the project my way, even though this leads me inevitably to re-inventing the wheel: a cloumsier one but nevertheless my version of the wheel.

I like to make things up too ... but I'm scared of hats because I tried to do one once and it came out big enough to fit a dinner plate! Now I stick with things that the size doesn't matter, like a baby blanket.

Last weekend I went to a ball and had to actually finish the border on the wrap during the getting-ready-and-drinking session. Everyone was fascinated but next time I'll try to be a little more organised Smile

I hope you enjoy your hat Mihaela, keep us posted on your next project!

Maybe I will post a picture of the hat here. Maybe you can also post images of your projects so we can inspire one from another.

You can find my projects (in between a host of other things) on my website http://www.lornajane.net but I will post updates here too and let you know how I go on!

I'm trying to settle on what my next project will be as I'll be spending a number of days at the not-in-laws (I'm not married to my partner so they are not my in-laws!) and would like to have something to keep my hands busy. I'll let you know what I choose Smile

I came across this magazine when I was looking for something, and I thought it was especially interesting because it's created by the editors of MAKE Magazine... it's called (appropriately enough) CRAFT and it's definitely different.

Just thought I'd pass it along...

Has anyone ever bought or sold anything from Etsy.com? It's kind of like an eBay for handmade items only - it's a pretty cool site, you should check it out if you haven't already.

I was thinking of selling some of my jewelry on there, but I was curious if anyone had any experience with it.

(yes, and they get bonus points for doing their site in PHP) Smile

Elizabeth - I recently did buy something from RoxyCraft on Etsy.com, some patterns for crochet creatures Smile It seemed quite straightforward and the patterns are fab, they arrive as a PDF attached to an email.

I was initially taken aback by an outbreak of crafty-ness in phpwomen, but hey, didn't this all start with the Jacquard loom? If it's good enough for Ada Lovelace ...

I'm so glad to find others who knit!

I start projects once in a while - usually for myself - but now, I have the best project ever: my little sister's pregnant - so I'm just gonna have to make lots of little sweaters and hats and socks as well as a nice blanket for my nephew! I find it so much more exciting to knit for a baby Smile

And I'm gonna get him this : http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/kids/592f/

I have a niece and I like to knit for her - if only because the projects are a manageable size! Knitting for myself takes far too long since I rarely seem to find the time (I've been knitting the same fingerless glove for three months!), but I like little projects such as the amigurumi critters that are around so much at the moment.
