OK here is where we will have the mentoring program for now. If you are looking for a mentor - or are willing to volunteer to mentor please sign in here noting whether you want to be a big sis or little sis or both.
Just remember that these kinds of programs take lots of work on both sides so if you are unable to commit to it - wait until you can.
Big Sis - your job is to lead the little sis to answers - not give them to her. You are encouraged to help in career decisions, learning direction/course, filling in holes in knowledge (or at least pointing them out) and anything else you wish to answer or learn along side your little sis. You are the guide to the PHP world for your little sis. You are also the one who ultimately accepts the mentor position of the little sis and all the responsibility it entails. If you feel it is not a good fit or just don't have the time and energy - that is perfectly acceptable.
Little Sis - your job is to listen and ask questions. You will be the driving force behind this partnership. You are perfectly capable of rejecting advice or direction if you choose to. You are the one who should be asking someone to mentor you. Try to pick someone who you would feel comfortable asking questions of or you think may become a friend over time. Knowledge isn't everything - ultimately we hope you become a partnership in time.
Hopefully we will build some lasting relationships this way.

accepting little sis's
I am open to be a mentor for 2 maybe 3 little sis's. I have already accepted one. I admit to being quite busy but would love to help others. I also admit to not knowing everything (server stuff, high level OO (enterprisey stuff) and anything front end in particular) but wouldn't mind learning with or through a little sis - as long as she is willing to struggle with me.

I'm happy to be a big sis, and take one or two people as little sis' to help along the path. I don't have huge wealth of experience but I've been dabbling in PHP for six years so I hope I've got skills enough to accompany someone through specific queries as well as provide general support to another woman in the working world.
A bit more about me: I'm 26 and currently working with AIX + Oracle + PHP. My degree is in Electronic Engineering and I'm a vim enthusiast but I'll be happy to join in whatever your background. I have a particular interest in open-source projects and use them at the slightest excuse, my current favourites are dokuwiki, textpattern, joomla! and serendipity.

I'll be a little sis I'm always the littlest!
I've finally got a full time time job in web programming. I'm not up to OO yet, but getting closer, and running PHP 4.3 at work.
Some things I am interested in finding out about:
Improving performance of loops, arrays.
Best Practice (cos I am definite I am not implementing a lot of Best Practice!)
OO
Working in a PHP/Oracle environment
Assistance with Oracle (although not a necessity!)
Do you think you match up?! PM me! I'm in Australia too!

I'm happy to be a mentor!
A little about me: I'm a 26 year-old guy living in Louisiana in the States. I'm married with three kids. I currently work for a medical IT company that operates on the LAMP platform. Before that, my specialties at my previous job were mostly with Oracle Forms and Reports, Oracle Designer, and Oracle Application Server (particularly PL/SQL-based data cartridges).
I started working with PHP in 2002 and have been loving it ever since. I've got some specialization in web scraping and all that it entails (HTTP protocol, HTML, XML, regular expressions, etc) and I've even written an article on the topic for php|architect magazine. I graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in computer science. I'm also a ZCE. You can find my blog at http://ishouldbecoding.com.
So, anyone still looking for a mentor?

I'd happily be a big sis.
A little about me: I'm 28, living in Norway(so I'm accessible during daytime Europe). I've got 5-6 years of PHP behind me(though not in a job), a bachelor in computer science, and experience in Pascal/Delphi(my fav), C#, Java, ASP.NET, Scheme, and tried a whole lot of other languages, and technologies.
I'm very friendly, and don't bite(unless requested to, of course). Try me on msn or mail me my name(no, pink isn't actually part of my name ) at vartdal.org

Hey Mary, nice to meet you. At the moment, I'm only sporadically seeing/hearing from the one "little sis" I have. So, if you'd like me to be your "big sis," I'd be happy to have you. Congrats on the new job, glad to have you as part of the PHP community, and I hope we'll see you in #phpwomen on Freenode.

I’m happy to be a big sis to any budding devs.
I’m a 23-year old guy and I live in England; I can’t say I have special expertise in any specific field, but if you’re looking for a mentor in general development then I think I can help.
Shoot me a PM/IM if you’re interested.

Hi all,
I heard about this site & the Big Sis, Little Sis ideas from Php Architect, & must say that i think it is a great idea.
I am a 31 years old guy, working as a web developer for about 8 years, which 3 of them is in PHP. I can't say i am an expert, i never really had a formal education in programming so i always feel like i a missing something but i always succeed to solve the issues i encounter.
Any way, would like to have both a big sister & little sister , i think i can assist to developers in their first steps & also will love to have a big sister to consult on new issues.
Cheers,
Sagee

Just to make sure you understand how it works, remember that if you want a big sis/mentor, you need to find someone you think you will feel comfortable with and then ask them to be your mentor. We have both men and women willing to be a big sis. If you have any problems finding one, feel free to pm me for help.

i could really use a big sis!
i've got some intro info on the introductions thread if you want to know more about me in general.
basically, i'm serious about reforging myself into a developer (so far i really like php!) and could use a hand.
i'm mostly the self-teaching type who has no problem scouring google for the answers, but there's a few questions i've been unable to solve on my own.
for the most part, programming theory is my weak point. i don't come from a computer science background, so this is my first experience with variables, functions, arrays, and such.
at this point, i can understand most of the vocabulary. i can read a piece of code, and generally work out what it's accomplishing. but writing it myself and understanding how to decide when to use a loop, how to leverage an array? that's where i get stuck.
maybe i've just not been doing this long enough yet, but regardless, i feel like i could use someone at my back.
anyone want to take me on? i have decent design skills to offer in trade if anyone needs their blog redone or something.

After some thought and some input from close friends, I believe it will be good for the community and myself if I volunteer to be a mentor to whoever needs one.
While I started my software adventure in desktop application development, I switched to web application development around 2002. After a year of two ASP (vbscript) development, I switched to PHP, and have been developing mostly in PHP for the last 5 years, besides some C++, C# and Java. I became a Zend Certified Engineer a little over 2 years ago, and have been working as a frontend oriented (with the occasional backend task) PHP Web developer for Zend Technologies' eBiz team. A more detailed picture of me is drawn in this interview.
I like to teach and explain, and love to see people learn and grow, especially if it's beyond what they expected to be their own limits. If you choose me to be your mentor, don't expect to get an intelligent google, spitting out a ready-to-use answer whenever you have a question. Expect that you will have to work for it to learn, and will actually gain knowledge, instead of getting a use&forget answer.
Since this is my first chance at mentoring, I will be taking on 1 protege only. Depending on mutual experiences, I might extend this in the future, or forget about mentoring at all. One small remark: I'm from the Netherlands, so I will likely not be completely in your TimeZone, and I may have some grammar issues at times.
I currently don't have any protegees. If you would like to become one, feel free to contact me by forum email or forum private message, or find me on irc.freenode.net/#phpc. (This last line will be updated when the situation changes)
~RW
Never ever approach a computer saying, or even thinking, I will just do this quickly.

Hello all,
As this has been an important part of the PHPWomen mission, we want to make our mentorship program a priority in 2010. We will be focusing more of our efforts on getting the word out about the program, and giving it a little more structure.
With that in mind, if you have actively participated in the program, either currently, or in the past, can you please contact me at elizabeth-at-naramore-dot-net or PM on here?
I'm interested in some information from you:
-are you a big sis or little sis (or both?)
-what has your experience been with the program?
-how can we make it better?
Thanks much - your input is extremely valuable to us!
E.
